Important Update: How Algonquin Park Backcountry Permits Work Now
If you've been to Algonquin Park Access # 1 in the past and remember stopping at the little Ontario Parks office to pick up your interior permit before launching your canoe, things have changed. Here's what you need to know before your next trip.
The staffed office at Access Point #1 is no longer operating
Ontario Parks has moved entirely to a self-serve, online permit system for backcountry camping across the province, and Algonquin is no different. There is no longer a staffed office at Access Point #1 where you can walk in and purchase or pick up a permit on the day of your trip. Everything is handled online, in advance.
This is actually good news for most paddlers — no lineup, no uncertainty, no hoping someone is behind the desk when you roll in at 7 am. But it does mean you need to have your reservation sorted before you arrive.
How it works now — step by step
- Book online at reservations.ontarioparks.ca up to 5 months before your departure date. Summer weekends fill fast — the 5-month window opens at 7 am and popular dates go quickly, so mark your calendar and be ready.
- Know your route before you book. You'll need to specify your access point (Access Point #1 — Kawawaymog Lake if you're launching with us), your start date, and the general route you plan to take. Have the Official Canoe Routes Map of Algonquin Park in front of you when you book — you'll need it to select your campsites.
- Print your reservation confirmation — or keep a digital copy. Your confirmation letter is your permit. That's it. No separate permit document, no sticker for your car, nothing to pick up anywhere. Ontario Parks wardens may ask to see it on the water, so make sure it's accessible — either a printed copy in your barrel or a screenshot saved offline on your phone (remember, there's no cell service in the interior).
- Nothing is required on your vehicle dashboard while you're out on the water. You don't need to display anything at the parking area at Access Point #1.
Can you still get a permit on the day without a reservation?
Technically, walk-in permits still exist — but availability on any given day is not guaranteed and cannot be confirmed in advance. On busy summer weekends and long weekends, interior campsites are frequently fully booked. If you're planning a trip without a reservation, you're taking a real risk of arriving at the water's edge without a valid permit. We strongly recommend booking in advance.

A few other things worth knowing
- Backcountry permits are per person, per night. The current adult rate is $12.43/night for ages 18 and over. Check the Friends of Algonquin Park fees page for the most current pricing, as rates can change seasonally.
- Maximum 9 people per backcountry campsite, and your group must follow the route specified on your permit.
- Parking at Access Point #1 is free — no parking permit required at Kawawaymog Lake.
- Backcountry camping is closed each spring until Ontario Parks officially opens the interior — typically once ice-out conditions are confirmed. Check before you book in April or early May.
What hasn't changed
